Ingrowing Hairs and Laser Hair Removal

If you suffer from Ingrown hairs, you need to find out about laser hair removal - a powerful way of tackling the problem of ingrowing hairs.

ingrowing hairs originates when hairs try to grow but do not penetrate your exterior of your skin. Instead they grow sideways along or under your skin, or even curl back and grow into your skin. Often ingrowing hairs occur in tandem with folliculitis, an infection of the follicle.

The Traditional Ways to Tackle Ingrown Hairs

The common approaches to tackling this upsetting problem are exfoliation and getting out the affected hairs one by one with tweezers. Neither of these methods address the cause of the problem and are at best a short lived solution and at worst can result in horrible scars and scabbing.

Mechanical Epilators

The use of mechanical epilating machines is a particular culprit in terms of ingrowing hairs - as the hairs are ripped from their roots at strange angles it is common for your root or follicle to become twisted or deformed, and ingrowing hairs can then become numerous in a short space of time.

Laser Hair Removal - the Best Solution?

Unlike the commonly used solutions, removal of hair by laser goes straight to the root of your problem - literally! In removal of hair by laser, special lasers seek out the follicle under your skin and disable it to stop any further regrowth from that follicle. Unlike electrolysis, which was in the past considered the only way to permanently stop growth, laser hair removal not only has a long term impact but also can be employed to rapidly treat significant parts of your body rather than the one shaft at a time that generally characterizes electrolysis treatments.

Ingrown Hair - the Causes

Whether you use shaving, waxing or one of the other methods of freeing yourself of unwanted body and facial hair, you would be in a tiny minority if you did not suffer from ingrowing hairs at one time or another. In actual fact this problem can even occur spontaneously on skin which has not even been tweezed, waxed or shaved at all, although it is more common on waxed or shaved skin.

The Future of Your Skin with Laser Hair Removal

If you are tired of battling with ingrowing hairs, perhaps now is the time to find out more about the advanced technological breakthroughs that have been made in laser hair removal, and discover how you could take advantage of removal of hair by laser to solve your ingrowing hairs problems - once and for all!

The Latest Developments in Skin Care

clipped from www.washingtonpost.com

What’s on the horizon for skin care? Is there something better than Botox? What new injectables are taking the market by storm? Is there a new miracle skin cream?

Herschenfeld’s practice is based in Wellesley, Mass. After graduating from Harvard Medical School, she completed residencies in internal medicine and dermatology, then joined two other dermatologists to found Dermatology Partners, Inc., a successful general and cosmetic dermatology practice. Dr. Herschenfeld is board certified in dermatology, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Her patients rely on her to diagnose and treat skin problems, to provide expert skin care advice and to perform cosmetic procedures including Botox, Restylane, collagen, Sculptra and laser treatments for many conditions.

Darker skin poses problems for hair-removal lasers

clipped from inyourface.freedomblogging.com
People with darker skin remain a challenge for experts in laser hair removal, even though the technology is the third most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States, behind Botox and dermal filler injections.
The difficulty facing darker-skinned patients and their doctors isn’t a question of prejudice but of physics.

It’s much trickier to destroy a dark hair that’s growing in dark skin — because both absorb the destructive laser energy, both can be damaged in a laser treatment.
“There is no good solution for thin or light hair on dark-skinned patients,” dermatologist Dr. Christine C. Dierickx (left), director of the Skin and Laser Clinic in Boom, Belgium, told a recent cosmetic-medicine conference at Harvard Medical School.

Dark pigment absorbs laser energy, which heats up and destroys the pigmented tissue, whether it’s a hair or surrounding skin.

Two Lasers Are Not Better than One

clipped from www.medpagetoday.com

The combination of alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers in a single session was also more painful and caused more hyperpigmentation than either type alone, according to Alireza Firooz, M.D., of the Tehran University of Medical Sciences, and colleagues.

But either single laser treatment — for four sessions at eight-week intervals — gives “long-term persistent efficacy in hair reduction with acceptable and transient adverse effects,” Dr. Firooz and colleagues reported in the October issue of Archives of Dermatology.

Among the 15 participants who completed the trial — four were lost to follow-up and one stopped because of adverse events — the average hair reduction 18 months after the last treatment was:

  • 75.9% for the 12-millimeter spot size alexandrite laser
  • 84.3% for the 18-millimeter spot size alexandrite laser
  • 73.6% for the Nd:YAG laser
  • 77.8% for the combination therapy
The differences in hair reduction were not significant, the researchers said.

Is there anything that lasers can’t do?

clipped from lfpress.ca

Cathy Potvin didn’t know everything about lasers when she started to consider spending a lot of money to buy a laser machine. But she did know how the machines had worked for her sisters, both of whom were doing laser cosmetic procedures to great acclaim.

Maura in Calgary and Joanne in Tecumseh both were running successful businesses removing skin blemishes, fine lines and hair from clients, both male and female. Potvin, 44, has a day job, and often worked on weekends with Joanne near Windsor.

It employs 13 people and offers a full range of spa treatments. It had offered occasional laser work in the past, but it was looking to expand its laser treatment hours. Potvin and her flexible schedule fit the bill perfectly.

She moved her Laser Anatomy business into the spa in June and hasn’t looked back.

Prices vary, but in general it can cost anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for any given procedure. Because it’s cosmetic, it’s not covered by OHIP.

Getting a grip on hair removal

clipped from nnsl.com
Esthetician Meagan Desjardins of Joie de Vivre is one of the professionals in Yellowknife to whom people who want hair removed can turn.

Desjardins, who came to Yellowknife from Vancouver, this been doing her work for five years.

“I love it,” said Desjardins. “It’s not the type of career I thought I’d get into. It’s not a ‘girly-girl’ career.

“There are many misconceptions about it,” she said. “People think it is like shaving and they will just grow back more hair.”

She prepares skin to be treated by applying toner to clean away oils and baby powder so that the wax does not remove skin.

Two kinds of wax are used. Regular or soft wax goes on the skin and is removed with a cloth. Hard wax can be removed without a cloth and is used in more sensitive areas.

Most of her clients are women, but she does get some men who want their necks or their backs done.

Plastic surgery demystified

clipped from www.eastandard.net
Plastic surgery is a recognised surgical specialty that includes both reconstructive and constructive surgery. Reconstructive surgery is used to correct abnormal structures in the body or to improve body functions. Cosmetic surgery is performed solely for the enhancement of appearance. Ideally it is concerned with reshaping, restoring and otherwise functioning properly for the purpose of beauty.

Dr Stanley Khainga and Dr Adan, plastic surgeons based at Kenyatta National Hospital are up to standard and can easily be compared to equivalent professionals in the UK.

“We even get clients from UK, tourists from other European countries and people from other African countries who come to Kenya, because the procedures are not only cheap but of high standard” says Dr Khainga.

“Some women have breasts that weigh as much as four kilos, a condition referred to as gigantomastia. It causes back pain, neck pain, cardiovascular and respiratory problems,” says doctor Adan.

At-Home Laser Hair Removal Gains Popularity

Some women will try just about anything to get rid of unwanted hair, and most of them are unpleasant.

There’s shaving or waxing. Not only are these methods uncomfortable and inconvenient, but they don’t last.

Hair grows back within hours of shaving and after a few weeks with wax.

Lasers have become the high-tech way to remove hair, but that means dropping thousands of dollars at a doctor’s office or a spa.
But now the FDA has approved a new portable at home laser you can use anytime, anywhere. It works with quick bursts of light energy that’s absorbed by the targeted hair making it fall out in a week or two.

“It doesn’t really kill the hair, it just makes it go into a very long resting phase. It can be for years,” explained Dr. Eric Bernstein, a paid spokesperson for the ‘Tria’ laser.

Bernstein says hair grows in cycles so the laser has to be used every few weeks initially.
The hair does eventually grow back, but it’s thinner and lighter and can be zapped again.
