Leukoderma is also used for this skin condition, as mentioned at wikipedia and Anti-Vitiligo http://www.antivitiligo.com/frequently-asked-questions.html

About 2% to 3% of total population is suffering from this skin condition. A cure of this skin condition normally take a long period of time. In most of the cases it also affects the emotional state of the patient more hardly than its skin. Because patients have to suffer a lot of stress as due to its cosmetic look.

It is right that it is non infectious or transmissible skin disease. Nor it is a pre cancerous disease. But some researcher or skin specialist said due to the lack of melanin a patient have risk to be affected by skin cancer. Because this substance has ability to absorb uvb and uva light which causes skin cancer.

Vitiligo Cure and some facts

Vitiligo, you often see people having white patches on skin. When some one ask them about these white patches on their body, why they not cure these spots. Most of the patients replies that there is no cure of vitiligo. This reply is right at some extent and not right also due to some reason.

Right in this way that you can only re-pigment your spots and can not eliminate underlying causes of disease. Furthermore causes of vitiligo are not fully known with certainty and causes may change in person to person.

If we say that cure of vitiligo is possible then we quote example of many people which get their pigmentation back and hence cure vitiligo patches.

uvb light

UVB light is an important radiation which affects human life hardly. Though it is not present all the time in sunlight, but intensity of uvb light in sunlight is gradually increasing due to current environmental conditions.

There is a close relation between the sunlight, uvb light and the skin care. It is the reason that the words uvb and uva are frequently used in skin care industry.

Sunlight contains of different wave length’s light in it. Among them one is most famous is Ultra Violet (UV). UV rays are further subdivided into sub types based on the wave length ranges. uvb light and uva are important components of sunlight.

UVB light

UV rays of ranges 280 to 315 nm wavelength called uvb light. (Ref: http://www.antivitiligo.com/vitiligo-treatment/uvb.html ) As it is clear by shortness of wave length these are highly energetic and has more frequency. uvb light is capable of damaging DNA of body and hence causes skin cancer. A latest study shows that about 90% of all the cases of skin cancer occurs due long exposure of body to uvb light.
uvb light used for the treatment of cancer by destroying cancer cell in skin. these are also useful in increasing the production of vitamin D in skin which is important ingredient for bone. On the other it is uvb light that causes burning and redness of skin when exposed to the sunlight. Prolong exposure of skin to the Sun is a major causes skin cancer.

uva rays

uva rays have wave length range 315 to 400 nm. These are the tanning rays of sunlight. These are not as hazardous as uvb light but can penetrate deeper into skin.

UVA and UVB both cause skin cancer by affecting DNA in human body besides this many other skin disorder causations revolved around these rays. UVA are tanning rays of the Sun and found in large quantity in sunlight. UVB’s quantity is much lower than that of the uva but it is more dangerous for human skin. Sun burn in skin due to the uvb light but it unlike uva not infiltrate deeper into skin.

Both uva and uvb are the major source of skin cancer. Most of the people realize uva as a less hazardous as compare to the uvb but a latest study indicate that it also cause skin cancer by indirect destruction of the skin cells.

PUVA

Know some benefit of these rays. In these days uva base treatment termed as PUVA is being popular due to its effectiveness. PUVA utilized for the treatment of different skin condition like Vitiligo, Psoraisis and eczema etc.
In this technique first psoralens are (Orally/ Topically) dozed to the patient, Psoralens are power sensitizer for skin to the tanning effects of these rays. After then a special device used which generates and emits uva to effected body part of the patients.

UVB and Medical treatment

UVB is also useful for the treatment different skin diseases. However in not use any sensitizing agent like PUVA.

Darker skin poses problems for hair-removal lasers

clipped from inyourface.freedomblogging.com
People with darker skin remain a challenge for experts in laser hair removal, even though the technology is the third most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States, behind Botox and dermal filler injections.
The difficulty facing darker-skinned patients and their doctors isn’t a question of prejudice but of physics.

It’s much trickier to destroy a dark hair that’s growing in dark skin — because both absorb the destructive laser energy, both can be damaged in a laser treatment.
“There is no good solution for thin or light hair on dark-skinned patients,” dermatologist Dr. Christine C. Dierickx (left), director of the Skin and Laser Clinic in Boom, Belgium, told a recent cosmetic-medicine conference at Harvard Medical School.

Dark pigment absorbs laser energy, which heats up and destroys the pigmented tissue, whether it’s a hair or surrounding skin.

Two Lasers Are Not Better than One

clipped from www.medpagetoday.com

The combination of alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers in a single session was also more painful and caused more hyperpigmentation than either type alone, according to Alireza Firooz, M.D., of the Tehran University of Medical Sciences, and colleagues.

But either single laser treatment — for four sessions at eight-week intervals — gives “long-term persistent efficacy in hair reduction with acceptable and transient adverse effects,” Dr. Firooz and colleagues reported in the October issue of Archives of Dermatology.

Among the 15 participants who completed the trial — four were lost to follow-up and one stopped because of adverse events — the average hair reduction 18 months after the last treatment was:

  • 75.9% for the 12-millimeter spot size alexandrite laser
  • 84.3% for the 18-millimeter spot size alexandrite laser
  • 73.6% for the Nd:YAG laser
  • 77.8% for the combination therapy
The differences in hair reduction were not significant, the researchers said.

Is there anything that lasers can’t do?

clipped from lfpress.ca

Cathy Potvin didn’t know everything about lasers when she started to consider spending a lot of money to buy a laser machine. But she did know how the machines had worked for her sisters, both of whom were doing laser cosmetic procedures to great acclaim.

Maura in Calgary and Joanne in Tecumseh both were running successful businesses removing skin blemishes, fine lines and hair from clients, both male and female. Potvin, 44, has a day job, and often worked on weekends with Joanne near Windsor.

It employs 13 people and offers a full range of spa treatments. It had offered occasional laser work in the past, but it was looking to expand its laser treatment hours. Potvin and her flexible schedule fit the bill perfectly.

She moved her Laser Anatomy business into the spa in June and hasn’t looked back.

Prices vary, but in general it can cost anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for any given procedure. Because it’s cosmetic, it’s not covered by OHIP.

Getting a grip on hair removal

clipped from nnsl.com
Esthetician Meagan Desjardins of Joie de Vivre is one of the professionals in Yellowknife to whom people who want hair removed can turn.

Desjardins, who came to Yellowknife from Vancouver, this been doing her work for five years.

“I love it,” said Desjardins. “It’s not the type of career I thought I’d get into. It’s not a ‘girly-girl’ career.

“There are many misconceptions about it,” she said. “People think it is like shaving and they will just grow back more hair.”

She prepares skin to be treated by applying toner to clean away oils and baby powder so that the wax does not remove skin.

Two kinds of wax are used. Regular or soft wax goes on the skin and is removed with a cloth. Hard wax can be removed without a cloth and is used in more sensitive areas.

Most of her clients are women, but she does get some men who want their necks or their backs done.

Plastic surgery demystified

clipped from www.eastandard.net
Plastic surgery is a recognised surgical specialty that includes both reconstructive and constructive surgery. Reconstructive surgery is used to correct abnormal structures in the body or to improve body functions. Cosmetic surgery is performed solely for the enhancement of appearance. Ideally it is concerned with reshaping, restoring and otherwise functioning properly for the purpose of beauty.

Dr Stanley Khainga and Dr Adan, plastic surgeons based at Kenyatta National Hospital are up to standard and can easily be compared to equivalent professionals in the UK.

“We even get clients from UK, tourists from other European countries and people from other African countries who come to Kenya, because the procedures are not only cheap but of high standard” says Dr Khainga.

“Some women have breasts that weigh as much as four kilos, a condition referred to as gigantomastia. It causes back pain, neck pain, cardiovascular and respiratory problems,” says doctor Adan.
